Reg. No. 2233 William Hyde, a native of Sheffield, attested with in the 82nd Regiment on 19 February 1846, at the age of 17
years and 10 months.  He was listed as “Under Age” at the time of his enlistment and his service did not count towards Good
Conduct Pay or Pension until his eighteenth birthday on 19 April 1846 .  His civilian trade was listed as a Book Keeper.

Promoted Corporal on 6 December 1848, Sergeant 1 January 1851 and Color Sergeant on 25 November 1853.   Present at the
siege and capture of Sebastopol on 8 September 1855.  Promoted Quarter Master Sergeant 1 July 1856.  Listed as present at
the action with the Mutineers before Cawnpore during the Indian Mutiny between 26 November and 16 December 1857, and in
the Indian Mutiny 1857,58 and 59.

William Hyde was promoted Sergeant Major with the 82nd Regiment on 1 December 1859, while the Regiment was still in India.  
Granted a Silver Medal with a Gratuity of 15 pounds for Long Service and Good Conduct per authority dated War Office Letter
10th June 1866.

Discharged at Netley on 1 November 1866 with 20 years and 197 days service, all with the 82nd Regiment of Foot.  Reason for
discharge being “ having been found unfit for further service” due to chronic rheumatism and general disability. (WO97/1629)

Sergeant Major Hyde was awarded the Meritorious Service medal with annuity of 20 pounds per annun from the Regimental
allowance. (WO101/6)

William Hyde is shown in the both the 1871 and 1891 census as a Chelsea out pensioner living in the Lambeth Borough of London.
He was shown as a widower and his unmarried adult daughter, Sophia, resided with him.

Sergeant Major William Hyde died 10 August 1895 at the age of sixty-seven.  His medals were formerly in the Usher collection.
