Private Connell served in "F" Company of the first
battalion Scots Guards. He arrived in South Africa
on November 14, 1899 and died prematurely only 4
months later. He is buried at the President Ave.
cemetery in Bloemfontein along with 1,730 other
souls; more than 1,600 of whom died from disease
including Pte. McCabe of the Gordon Highlanders
